The U.S. Senate has passed a landmark bipartisan infrastructure bill with a 72-28 vote, marking the largest federal investment in physical infrastructure in over four decades.
The $1.2 trillion package includes $110 billion for roads and bridges, $65 billion for broadband expansion, $55 billion for clean water infrastructure, and $47 billion for climate resilience measures.
Senate leaders from both parties hailed the vote as proof that bipartisan cooperation remains possible on major policy issues.
“This bill is about investing in America’s future,” said the Senate Majority Leader. “Every community in this country will benefit from these investments in roads, bridges, broadband, and clean water.”
The bill now moves to the House, where its prospects are less certain amid disagreements over the scope of accompanying social spending legislation.
