The Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling today that fundamentally reshapes the legal framework governing government access to personal data stored by technology companies.
In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that law enforcement agencies must obtain a warrant based on probable cause before accessing individuals’ cloud-stored data, closing what privacy advocates had long called a dangerous loophole.
The case originated when federal investigators obtained three years of a suspect’s email records, location data, and cloud storage files from multiple tech companies without a traditional warrant.
Justice Sarah Blackwell, writing for the majority, stated: “The Fourth Amendment’s protections do not evaporate simply because personal information is entrusted to a third party for storage.”
Technology companies including Apple, Google, and Microsoft had filed amicus briefs supporting stronger privacy protections, arguing that consumer trust depends on robust legal safeguards.
