As news of Dangote’s promise to donate to the displaced people and Boko Haram victims in the northeast, people are expressing their concerns.
Dangote’s promise is to donate N2 billion for amenities and additionally to provide enough food to feed the 2 million IDPs, which would be approximately about $600 million worth of food at $10/day/head for 30 days.
“Like I said earlier when I visited the IDP camps, our partnership with Borno State aims to create jobs for our people. Also I assure you that the entire food for IDPs during Ramadan will be given by the Dangote Foundation to assist the State government,” Dangote promised in Borno today according to reports.
But important on the minds of the people is to see that this promise properly materializes and the money and food does not get lost in transit or never donated.
In 2013, the billionaire made a promise to donate N1 billion to the ravaged states. This was supposed to be shared with Borno getting N200 million, according to the then Minister of State for Agriculture, Alhaji Bukar Tijjani, Yobe getting N150 million and Adamawa getting N100 million (according to impact).
However since the pledged donation which governor Shettima promised to use to the benefit of the people, the people said there has been no public account of how the said funds was spent if it was received.
“We would like transparency,” Aba Gana told NewsRescue. “We need to know how the money is spent. It is better Dangote sets up his committee to monitor the disbursement so we can relate direct to him with no third party.”
“We never knew what happened to the N200 million the other time,” another local said.
